Cycle Martha’s Vineyard
Cycle Martha’s Vineyard, a 50 or 100K recreational ride around the Island, is set for Sunday, October 14.
The event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard. Proceeds will benefit Windemere Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and other Rotary charities. This year’s Cycle Martha’s Vineyard event is in memory of Lucinda Chandler.
There is a $100 registration fee. The fee entitles each rider to aid stations and assistance along the course, a tee-shirt and post-ride barbecue.

Mike McCarthy receives gridiron honor
Former Vineyard quarterback Mike McCarthy was named to the New England Football Conference honor roll last weekend. Mike had 133 yards passing and threw for touchdowns of 66 and 27 yards to lead the Bridgewater State Bears to a 26-14 victory over Westfield State. He also ran for 93 yards on 8.5 yards per carry. The Bears are currently 4-1 on the season.
Beginner adult tennis clinic
Martha’s Vineyard Community Tennis (MVCT) will sponsor an adult beginning tennis clinic on Saturday, October 13 on the clay courts of Farm Neck in Oak Bluffs. The clinic is designed for people 18 years of age or over who have never played or have very little tennis experience.
The cost is $10 and lunch is included. Racquets and balls will be provided but those with racquets should bring them. There will be two hours of instruction, from 9 to 11 am. At 11:30, after lunch, there will be a round robin of games to exercise the new skills for two hours.

Tennis courts are open
The Vineyard Haven Tennis Foundation invites Islanders to play tennis on the Reade courts at the end of Boxberry Avenue off Franklin Street in Tisbury free of charge. Leased in the summer, the courts are made available to the public in the fall, winter, and spring.
Over the Hill soccer
The Vineyard FC Masters defeated hosts Milton FC, 4-0 on Sunday. Edilson “Pazone” Costa scored a pair of goals. Vander Souza and James “Reuben” Fitzgerald each scored once.
With the win, VFC remained atop the New England Over The Hill Soccer League’s Masters Division 6 South standings, unbeaten at 5-0, with 15 points.
VFC travels to Norfolk on Sunday, October 7. The next home match is vs. Westwood FC on Sunday, October 14, at the MVRHS back field.
