Tips for Better Play

From his warm winter spot in Florida, Life Master and IBC director Ed Russell shares this tip for better play: “In order to be truly successful at bridge, you must understand that it is a partnership game. It is a game. If you watch any game, you will see that there are brilliant plays; a fabulous catch, a ball, the double-fault serve, the strike-out. These are all part of the game and bridge has them as well.

“If you understand your partner, the more enjoyable the event. Make sure you are both playing the same conventions, your point ranges are the same, you both understand what certain bids mean, or how you would lead.

“You may find it helpful to practice beforehand with your partner. Deal our 13 cards and discuss what you would bid with the hand. What would you open, what would you bid if your partner opened one of a minor, what would you bid if your partner opened one no trump, how would you lead from that hand?

“Like the great golfer said, ‘The more I practice, the luckier I get.'”

The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) sanctions all three of the island duplicate bridge clubs although it is not necessary to belong to the ACBL in order to join these duplicate competitions.
