State police cited a West Tisbury man Sunday afternoon, March 3, after a single car accident that knocked out power to many Island homes and businesses.

A vehicle driven by Wilbur Dean, 70, of West Tisbury, left the road and came to rest in a gully off State Road, near the lower end of Lambert’s Cove Road.

A Tisbury ambulance crew took Mr. Dean to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for observation. Police said he did not appear to be seriously injured.

Mr. Dean said he blacked out temporarily, according to the police report. State police issued a marked lanes violation and sent a citation to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles recommending that his license be suspended.

When the vehicle left the roadway, it clipped a guide wire supporting a utility pole, according to police. The wire snapped upward into the power lines, causing an outage. Several residents said they were without electricity for about 45 minutes.
