The Martha’s Vineyard varsity girls hockey team played at their best for 15 minutes and were good enough the rest of the way to pick up a 4-1 Southeastern Mass. Girls Hockey League win over Bourne/Mashpee/Wareham (BMW) Saturday at the MV Arena.

The Vineyarders (6-2-2, 5-0-1 SEMGHL Southeast) came out flying in the first period, outshooting the visitors 12-1, but the game remained scoreless until Aubrey Ashmun lit the lamp from Sydney Davies with 20 seconds left to the intermission.

“The first period was one of the better periods we’ve played all year,” Vineyard coach John Fiorito said. “We dominated and played great, then we kind of stopped skating.”

Callie Jackson put M.V. up 2-0 with a second period goal, assisted by Emily Hammett. Aubrey Ashmun scored a power play goal 16 seconds into the third period. Alex Clark followed with her first goal of the season, assisted by Haven Huck and Aubrey Ashmun.

The girls play at North Quincy Wednesday and host Nauset Saturday at 1 pm.
