The Heat took a 1-0 lead in the best of three RCBL championship series with a 114-112 win Monday night at the Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown.

The opening game between the past two league champs was an intense, physical contest throughout. The Heat led 55-54 at the half and the teams were rarely separated by more than a couple of buckets. Jade Cash racked up 52 points on the night and Asil Cash added another 38, but it wasn’t quite enough to beat the Heat.

With seconds remaining and the Heat ahead, 113-109, Asil Cash drained a three. The Suns stole the ball on the ensuing play but called a timeout they didn’t have (a la Chris Webber in the 1993 NCAA men’s title game between Michigan and North Carolina), resulting in a technical foul. Nick Viera added the insurance point, his last of 41 for the game, and the Heat sealed the win.

Four additional Heat players reached double figures. Tim Scott scored 23, with five treys. Lucas Brewer had 14. Will Fielding and Matt Gebo added 10 apiece. Asa Rey scored 13 for the Suns.

Game two, set for Monday night at 6:15 pm, will have a hard act to follow.
