Edgartown police turned to social media this week to help identify a suspect shown in a surveillance video slashing a motorcycle tire. Edgartown police posted the surveillance video on the department’s Facebook page Tuesday at about noon. The Times posted the story on mvtimes.com with a link to the video.

Within two hours, the suspect called police and identified himself.

Police have not identified man seen on the surveillance video, but said he was a student attending college off-Island. He told police he would return to Martha’s Vineyard this weekend for questioning.

The 52 second video shows a man dressed in rust colored pants and a dark West Tisbury Fire Department tee-shirt. The man strolls casually across the street and leans against a tree. After looking thoroughly in all directions, he quickly kneels down and slashes the tire of a motorcycle. He then runs back across the street and drives away in a pickup truck.

The slashing incident happened on March 28, at 4:10 pm on Church Street, near the Visitors Center, according to police.
