Following spring vacation, the Vineyard girls tennis team improved to 5-4, picking up two wins in five days.
Tuesday in Oak Bluffs, M.V. edged Pope John Paul II of Hyannis, 3-2. The Vineyarders won all three singles matches, but the Lions prevailed in doubles.
Sam Potter rolled over Lexi Cornwall, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles. Charlotte Potter followed suit in third singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Emily Canzano. Josie Iadicicco rallied to defeat Haylee Whiteley at second singles, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The match of the day was second doubles, with the Lions chalking up a point as Julia Grady and Allison Santos defeated Amadine Muniz and Lucy Ulyatt, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. PJPII also won the first doubles match as Rachel McLellan and Jacquelyn Germani won by default over Avery Hazell and Diamond Araujo with the score 3-6, 7-5.
The Vineyarders earned a 4-1 win over visiting Bishop Stang in an Eastern Athletic Conference match Friday. Sam Potter toughed out a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Katie Vasconcelos at first singles. The Spartans earned their one win in second singles as Emma Mills edged Josie Iadicicco, 5-7, 6-4, (10-6 tie-breaker). Charlotte Potter downed Lauren Shallcross, 6-0, 6-1, at third singles. Diamond Araujo and Avery Hazell topped Smita Rajar and Charlotte Bednar at first doubles, 6-2, 6-4. The second doubles match went the distance, with Madison McBride and Amadine Muniz winning, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, over Jacqui Andrade and Emily McGrath.
