M.V. softballers best O’ Bryant, 21-9

The Vineyarders improved to 5-10 with a 21-9 six-inning win over John O’ Bryant on May 12 in Boston.

Mariah Duarte was 3 for 4 with seven RBIs, hitting a grand slam in the second inning as the Purple shook off an early 6-1 deficit. Emily Turney was 2 for 3 with a triple and Sarah Strem doubled.

The Vineyarders led by just one in the top of the sixth before piling on 13 more runs. M.V. secured the mercy rule shortened win with a game-ending double play. Emily Turney threw to Amanda Fielding for the out at first. With the O’ Bryant runner heading home, Fielding then fired a strike to catcher Miranda Tokarz at the plate for the final out.

Vineyard pitcher Jessica Sonia had an unusual set of stats, allowing one hit and no earned runs, with three strikeouts and 13 walks.

The Vineyarders host Coyle Cassidy on Friday (3:15 pm) and Cambridge Rindge and Latin on Sunday (12:30). Senior day at MVRHS is Thursday, May 22 (3:15 pm) against Bourne.
