Maureen P. Cunningham of Brielle, N.J., and Martha’s Vineyard died at her Brielle home on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, after a long and valiant battle with breast cancer. She was 66.
Until her very last moments, she was forever grateful for the efforts and compassion of her doctor, Dr. Nahum, and his oncology nurses at the RCCA Howell Division.
Maureen was born in New York and raised in the Bronx. She moved to New Jersey in 1966, first to Point Pleasant, before settling in Brielle in 1972. Since 2000, she enjoyed a great deal of time at her second home in Edgartown.
She earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education from Monmouth College. Maureen was a dedicated teacher of Grades 2, 5, and 6 for 30 years at East Dover Elementary School, Toms River. She also taught 7th grade gifted and talented at Veterans Memorial Middle School, Brick, in 1986-’87. She was devoted to her students, and was named a Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program Award Recipient in 1991. She was a loving, loyal person, and a treasured sister.
Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Thomas J. Cunningham in 1971, and Rose Cunningham in 1993. She is survived by her beloved sister, Rosemary Cunningham, also of Brielle and Martha’s Vineyard. Maureen will be missed by her beloved black Lab, Rosie, and was predeceased by her Beagle, Charity, in 1983, and by her chocolate Lab, Daisy, in 2009.
