Cynthia Mary (Moreis) Vieira of Pocasset, an Island native, died on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich. She was 83.
Born on May 30, 1931 at home in Vineyard Haven, Cynthia was the third oldest of 17 children of Peter A. and Mary (Silvia) Moreis, who predeceased her.
She became a private duty nurse and owned and operated “Sunny Haven” on Edgartown Road in Vineyard Haven where she cared for the elderly. She subsequently moved to Pocasset.
Cynthia enjoyed bingo nights and was past president of the VFW Post 9261 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary. There was nothing she cherished more than her family and friends.
Cynthia was formerly married to Herbert Devine Sr., Kenneth Belain, James Heathman, and Frank Vieira.
Cynthia was the mother of Herbert Devine Jr. and Nancy A. Lopes. She is also survived by her siblings, Anna Mae Cecilio, James Moreis, Madeline Moreis, Josephine Tucker, her half-brothers, Theophilus Araujo, Joseph Araujo, David Araujo, Julio Araujo, John Araujo, and her half-sister, Adelena Vanderhoop, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Devine Lobo and her sons, Peter Devine and Dennis Devine, and her brothers Raymond Moreis, Peter Moreis and William Moreis and her half-brother, Paul Araujo.
Visiting hours were held on Monday, November 17. And her funeral mass was celebrated in St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven on Tuesday,
November 18, officiated by Rev. Michael Nagle. Burial followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery, State Road, Vineyard Haven.
