Marie J. Impaglia Knox of Marthas Vineyard; California; and Auburn, New York, died unexpectedly from a heart attack on October 8, 2014, at Auburn Community Hospital. She was 72.
Marie was born in Auburn on August 23, 1942, the daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret DiBagio Impaglia. Marie or “Mariee,” as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was a hair stylist for more than 50 years. Marie worked on several Caribbean cruise ships, owned and operated several salons, including Individual Salon & Spa on Martha’s Vineyard, all while raising her three children and a granddaughter. Marie became very involved in the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club, and in her Faith Community Church communities during her time there. After selling her business on the Island, Marie moved to California to pursue her dream of becoming a stylist on the west coast. She spent her most recent time at Proper Hair in Newport Beach. Marie was an artistic and creative individual with an eye for beauty who inspired many in her field.
Marie had a very large heart, and was always finding ways to help others. She sponsored children in need as well as donating to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation, and fundraising events for local battered women’s shelters. Marie loved self education, was still attending trade shows and classes to improve her techniques as a stylist, and became a part of Toastmasters International. Marie was also very much dedicated to her spiritual relationship with the Lord, and deeply involved in her church communities.
Marie had recently moved back to upstate New York from California to be closer to her family, old friends, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was enjoying getting back to her roots, reconnecting with family members and old friends. Marie was a very spiritual, kind, loving, gentle woman who would do just about anything for anyone. She will be sadly missed by all; she now is with her savior, Jesus Christ.
She is survived by three children, Richard, Gina, and Valerie Knox; three grandchildren, Britny, Sandra, and Nigel Knox; and two great-grandchildren, Keith and Kaya Hawkins.
In addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by a brother, John “Butch” Impaglia, and a sister-in-law, Dolores Rondina.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Maries Life is being held on Island at the FOCUS Center 450 Lambert’s Cove Rd, West Tisbury at 2 pm on Sunday, November 30. For any information regarding the service, call 562-453-9344 or email bb1knox@yahoo.com.
