Valentine’s Day is Saturday, Feb. 14, and local businesses are gearing up for a surge in greeting cards and chocolate sales, and finalizing prix-fixe menus and dinner reservations. While the usual formula for Cupid’s favorite day is tried and true, the Island offers some more original ways to celebrate the holiday.

The Night Heron Gallery in Vineyard Haven will host a special Valentine’s weekend celebration, including a wine and chocolate party on Friday, Feb. 13, from 4 pm to 7 pm. The gallery, a cooperative of 10 local artisans showing a dynamic mix of Vineyard-made products, has historically been closed throughout the winter, but will reopen for this weekend only from Thursday through Sunday. Many of the artists have created one-of-a-kind gifts, including vintage cut-velvet heart-shaped pillows made by Sylvie Farrington, handmade valentine’s cards and love boxes by Ingrid Goff Maidoff, unique hearts by jeweler Kathy Tackabury, and a selection of pearls from Diana Stewart. Call the Night Heron Gallery at 508-696-9500 for additional information.

Pamper yourself or your loved one at Treat Yourself Spa in Oak Bluffs, with a number of daily specials and surprise events. From Thursday through Saturday the spa will feature complimentary consultations, skincare analysis, product recommendations, and professional makeup applications. Also on Saturday, catch a special appearance by Jon Stetson, mentalist, for complementary readings. Guests who spend $50 or more will be entered to win a spring makeover, and a portion of sales from the events will also benefit the spa’s Little Stars Haven Foundation, which will help raise awareness for child abuse. For more details, call Treat Yourself at 508-696-3800 or visit treatyourselfspa.com.

If it’s the thought that counts, make sure to stop by the Linden Tree on Main Street in Vineyard Haven from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. Join Sense of Wonder Creations’ in spreading the holiday cheer by bringing a homemade heart with your hopes and dreams, or prayers for your family, friends, or the world, and placing it on the historic tree. When the chocolate has been eaten and the red roses have died, you will still have a valentine promise to hang on to.
