Five Martha’s Vineyard masters swimmers traveled to Cambridge Sunday to compete in the New England Masters Championships “Distance Day” event, held at Harvard’s Blodgett pool.
Leslie Craven, Elizabeth Goodell, Liz Fox, Jonathan Chatinover, and Les Cutler swam in the 1,650-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle swims. The 1,650 freestyle is considered the “swimmers mile,” as it is slightly (9.6 yards) longer than the Olympic 1,500-meter distance.
Leslie Craven was the fastest of the Vineyard distance swimmers, placing second in the 1,650-yard freestyle in the women’s 55- to 59-year-old age group in the outstanding time of 21:08.80.
Elizabeth Goodell swam the 1,650-yard freestyle for the first time, and she was sixth in the women’s 45- to 49-year-old age group in a time of 28:36.86.
Jonathan Chatinover was fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in the men’s 50- to 54-year-old age group in a time of 22:50.31. Jon’s time was 20 seconds faster than his seed time.
Les Cutler was fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle in the men’s 70- to 74-year-old age group in a time of 33:05.51, which was a minute and 25 seconds faster than his seed time.
Liz Fox was fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle in the women’s 60- to 64-year-old age group in a time of 16:43.82, which was nearly a minute under her seed time.
