On a perfect spring afternoon, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) boys’ varsity tennis team defeated Nauset High School away on Wednesday afternoon.
Connor Downing had a tough match against a “big lefty” but pulled out the win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. “It took him a little while to figure him out, but he figured it out after the first set and went on to win,” head coach Eric Meyer told The Times in a telephone call Thursday.
Zak Danz won 6-2, 6-0 at second singles and David Webster also came out on top 6-3, 6-4. “The win at number three for David Webster was good,” Mr. Meyer said. “He’s a pretty good fit at number three so I hope that all works out.”
On the doubles front, Max Hammond and James Kelliher won 6-4, 7-5 at first doubles, and Charlie Parkhurst and Graham Lewis lost 3-6, 4-6.
“We played much better certainly,” Mr. Meyer said.
Next match is away Friday, April 17 at Coyle and Cassidy, and then the boys are off for school break until Tuesday, April 28 when they play away at Bishop Feehan. The next home match is Wednesday, April 29 against Bishop Stang at 3pm. All three contests are league games.
