Elsie Mae Gross Landers of Oak Bluffs died Monday evening, April 27, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was 83.
Elsie was born in Edgartown on Oct. 27, 1931, to Benjamin and Grace (Fisher) Gross. She attended the Edgartown School. Elsie later resided in Oak Bluffs. She was the beloved wife of Herbert Landers. Elsie had a house-cleaning service for many years, and spent every scalloping season helping her husband. She was also a certified lifeguard. Elsie enjoyed swimming, gardening, playing basketball and card games, and caring for children.
Elsie is survived by her beloved husband Herbert of Oak Bluffs; daughter Patricia M. Sylva of Oak Bluffs; brother Ralph Gross of Edgartown; two sisters, Carol Warris of New Hampshire and Emma Perkins of Florida; six grandchildren, Sonya Joy, Brittney Gundersen, Colette Sylva, Leland Sylva, Josiah Sylva, and Amy Landers; and 11 great-grandchildren. Elsie was predeceased by her daughter Margaret L. Landers and her sisters, Grace Kearns, Norma Gross, and Marilyn Agnes Gross.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 16, at 1 pm in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Pacific Avenue, Oak Bluffs. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs.
