The Tashmoo Golf Links were located on State Road, right behind the Vineyard Haven pumping station where the scenic-overlook fields are today. It was said to have been a nine-hole course. Vineyard Haven native and sports enthusiast Stan Lair (1902–87) noted it in an interview: “Some of the holes were on the opposite side of the State Road. They’d shoot right over the State Road. To see that area now, today, you would think that would be impossible, but in those days there were hardly any trees there.”

It wasn’t the only property the water company shared with local athletes during the early 1900s: Just across West Spring Street, a community baseball field attracted kids and adults alike, where today sits a quiet water department lot.
