Margaret “Marnie” C. Berndt, 78, of Charlottesville, Va., died peacefully on April 23, 2015. She was born on May 20, 1936, in Rochester, Minn. Marnie was the daughter of Dr. Edward N. Cook of the Mayo Clinic and his wife Jean Moore Cook. Marnie was the beloved wife of Carroll M. Berndt Jr.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two daughters, Dorcey M. Berndt and Lucinda J. Berndt; her son, Carroll M. Berndt III (“Petey”); her sister, Nancy Nelson; her brother-in-law, William Ernest Berndt and his wife Mary Lou, and her sister-in-law Dawn Cook. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Edward N. Cook Jr.
Marnie grew up in Rochester, Minn., prior to receiving her degree from Hollins University in Roanoke, Va. It was there she met her future husband, Carroll “Bo” Berndt. Bo asked her to marry him on their second date. Marnie finished college while Bo served overseas in the U.S. Navy. After graduation, she and Bo were married and settled down in Glencoe, Mad., where they raised their three children. They spent many summer vacations on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, where they especially loved visiting their son’s restaurant, Coop de Ville.
Marnie was very active in the Junior League of Baltimore, and was instrumental in bringing professional tennis to the city. Marnie was a longtime docent and member of the Board of Visitors at Ladew Topiary Gardens. After retirement, Marnie and Bo moved to Charlottesville, Va., where they enjoyed attending University of Virginia sporting events and rooting for the Cavaliers.
A memorial service will be conducted at St. Paul’s Ivy Episcopal Church in Ivy, Va., at 11 am on Saturday, May 9, 2015, officiated by the Reverend Dr. Heyward H. Macdonald. An inurnment will follow at the University of Virginia Cemetery and Columbarium.
