Updated 7:40 am, Tuesday
In a sudden detour, this morning The Tisbury Police Department announced that road construction set to begin this morning would be postponed until after Labor Day weekend. Tisbury Police posted the announcement on the department’s Twitter account. There was no explanation for the schedule change.
The department posted the following message: “Good Morning! The traffic construction planned for this week on Beach Street/5 Corners has been cancelled until after Labor Day.”
Last Thursday, the department took to social media to caution drivers that road construction set to begin Tuesday, June 2 and continue to Friday, June 5 between Five Corners and Main Street will reduce traffic to one lane on the heavily traveled roadway.
Police posted an announcement on the department’s Twitter account to say that crews would be at work from 7:30 am to 3 pm. Police advised travelers to “prepare for significant delays.”
Lieutenant Eerik Meisner said the work was in preparation for the movement of utility poles from the north to the south side of the road this fall.
Asked why the announcement was not made earlier Mr. Meisner said he had only learned about the planned construction late last Wednesday. Town and utility officials provided no information.
Police issued the following tweets last Thursday:
