On Thursday, August 27, at 7 pm, the second performance of the musical “Flying Over Sunset” will take the stage of the Vineyard Arts Project in Edgartown.
The nonprofit performing arts residency center has hosted the team behind “Flying Over Sunset” since August 17, and the first performance took place on Tuesday night.
According to a press release, “Flying Over Sunset” is presented in a developmental workshop under the guidance of Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright James Lapine (“Into The Woods”). Written and directed by James Lapine, “Flying Over Sunset” features music by Tom Kitt (“Next to Normal”) and lyrics by Michael Korie (“Grey Gardens”). The cast includes Christine Ebersole (“Grey Gardens”), Tam Mutu (“Doctor Zhivago”), Boyd Gaines (“Journey’s End”), David Turner (“Sunday in the Park with George”), Julia Murney (“The Wild Party”), Jenni Barber (“Wicked”), and Jennifer Sanchez (“Ghost the Musical”).
“Flying over Sunset” is set in Los Angeles in the mid-1950s, when the unregulated drug LSD is being prescribed by the psychiatric community of Beverly Hills as a therapeutic tool for some of their most celebrated clients. Clients include iconic American film star Cary Grant; tortured screenwriter and playwright Clare Boothe Luce; and Aldous Huxley, distinguished author of “Brave New World.” Together in “Flying Over Sunset,” these characters embark on a journey of self-awareness as they come together in an LSD salon hosted by the ever-ambitious Clare Boothe Luce (Ms. Ebersole).
