With the thousands of New Yorkers visiting the Island, you come to wonder what they think about the our pizza offerings. New York might be known as the land of great pizza (mind you, not the only land of great pizza, but the favorite among many), but the Island has an ample offering of over 10 specialty pizza shops that cater to every palate. For those craving a traditional slice (or even a gourmet pie), we’ve covered some ground, and here are our findings, by town:
Edgartown
At Isola, you can start off with a 16-inch cheese pizza (or a 10-inch gluten-free cheese pizza) and add on the toppings. If you prefer to have the work done for you, order off their specialty pizza menu. Either way, you need to try their slices — ever so crisp, and perfect for creating that “fold while you walk” pizza slice.

Edgartown Pizza is where Danny Segal (Canadian-born, Israeli-raised resident) serves up some serious pies, such as Xtreme Pizza Lovers and Xtreme Veggie, at a family-favorite Edgartown spot. Their two most popular pies are the Buffalo Chicken and the Brazilian. Ask for the local’s pizza special; you’ll be happily surprised at this unadvertised option.

Slice of Edgartown is known for having New York–style pizza in downtown Edgartown. It’s the perfect stop for an appetizer slice before heading to dinner in town.

The Pizza Place is the one spot where you have to get a slice of their Hawaiian pizza — juicy, sweet pineapple chunks laced around thinly sliced ham. Don’t let the revolving pizza stand scare you; it’s worth it.

Oak Bluffs
Giordano’s has been serving the Island since 1930, and now the fourth generation is dedicated to bringing you thin-crust pizza in town. Popular pizzas vary with the time of year; this past weekend the Veggie Special was a hit, but with the locals, the Vineyard Special (onion, peppers, mushroom, linguica, salami, extra cheese) is the most ordered pie around. If you’re lucky, you’ll run into owner Buster Giordano, who recently gave me a little history lesson on this Island staple — a true landmark.

Vineyard Haven
Rocco’s offers a daily specialty pie that rotates (some offerings have included a Mexican pizza, bacon ranch pizza, and baked potato pizza). This mainstay is open year-round, and has been for the past eight years. Christopher Pantalone is the owner, and brother Matthew works the dough.

Wolf’s Den, one of the most recently opened pizza shops on-Island, has been well received by the locals, who already have their favorites (including the Big Mac and the Meat Lover’s). Their crust is a personal favorite; it’s not NY style, but a thicker, chewier, pan-pizza-like crust.

Island Fresh Pizza and Subs is the newest pizza place on the Island. Their menu boasts traditional-style pizzas and many Brazilian favorites. Be sure to pick one with the option of catupiry, a Brazilian cream cheese. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re bound to soon; they’ll be offering year-round delivery starting this month.
