On Monday, drivers may take a left, but not a right. Tisbury town officials will begin a one-month experiment and reverse traffic flow on Union Street. Traffic, which now flows from Main Street to Water Street and the Vineyard Haven Steamship Authority (SSA) terminal, will be reversed. The one-way street will run east to west from Water Street to Main Street until Monday, Oct. 12, as part of a traffic trial.
The redirection is designed to improve traffic flow in the downtown area and relieve congestion at the Five Corners intersection. If successful, it may lead to a permanent change, pending a hearing.
There will be temporary signage to alert drivers traveling on Main Street that turning right down Union Street is not an option.
