On Saturday, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School swim team participated in its first meet of the season, the Relay Carnival at the newly reopened pool at Sandwich High School.
The Relay Carnival, an all-relay event, featured two boys relays, two girls relays and seven mixed relays. In the final team standings, the Vineyarders placed sixth out of the seven teams attending, and had three third-place finishes. Nantucket finished first, Nauset was second, and Barnstable was third.
The boys 200 freestyle relay team (Evan Sauter, Harrison Dorr, Tucker Cosgrove, and Patrick Best) finished 0.18 seconds off their school record, and only 1.3 seconds away from qualifying for the sectional meet. The mixed 4×100 yard individual medley (Tucker, Renee Goodale, Kate Hansen, and Evan) and mixed 400-yard freestyle relay (Lia Potter, Tucker, Renee, and Patrick) also had third-place finishes. The girls 200 medley relay (Charlotte Rooney, Renee, Lia, and Kate) finished fourth in 2:08.34 — a new school record, and only 1.45 seconds away from qualifying for sectionals. The girls 200-yard freestyle relay (Jessica Sonia, Kate, Charlotte, and Lia) finished sixth in 1:58.31, only 1.9 seconds off the school record. The second girls 200 freestyle relay (Lucy Thompson, Salyn Yancey, Ellie Hanjian, and Julia Sauter) also scored points with an eighth-place finish. The mixed 400-yard medley relay (Evan, Renee, Lia, and Patrick) finished sixth, with Evan setting a school record in the 100-yard backstroke leading off the relay. Also scoring points with seventh-place finishes were the mixed 500-yard freestyle relay (Harrison, Jessica, Charlotte, and Evan) and mixed 200-yard breaststroke relay (Jillian Pyden, Keith Chatinover, Gabby Wilbur, and Raven McCormack).
Lucy and Keith were the first two Charter School students to participate in a Regional High School sporting event. The Vineyarders’ first home meet is Thursday, Jan. 7, against Sandwich.
