Charles Nevin Greenaway, the son of Anne Nevin of West Tisbury and Mel Greenaway of North Conway, N.H., died suddenly on Tuesday evening, Feb. 16, 2016, at his home in West Tisbury. He was 33.
Charles was the first graduate of the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School in 1999. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 2003, and from the Five Branches Institute of Acupuncture in 2010.
From an early age, Charles excelled at golf. He was well known at all of the Island golf courses. After school he would work at Island Music Store and then head over to work at the Wintertide, then at Five Corners. He taught himself to play the trumpet, bass guitar, and the keyboard. At Wintertide he learned to set up sound for bands.
He was the sound technician at the University of Massachusetts. There he had many opportunities to do sound for well-known musicians such as B.B. King and Dave Matthews. He toured with Medeski Martin and Wood as far as Russia.
While still at the University of Massachusetts, he attended alternative medicine workshops. He visited California and settled on attending Five Branches Institute. He continued sound work all over California.
Charles will be missed by everyone who knew him. He was a soft-spoken, caring, and spiritually healing individual.
Charles leaves his parents, his brother Colby, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
His funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 21, in the West Tisbury Congregational Church, State Road, West Tisbury. His burial followed in the West Tisbury Cemetery, State Road, West Tisbury.
