The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys lacrosse team earned a spot in the South Region Division 3 postseason tournament with a convincing 11-8 victory over Mashpee on Tuesday at the high school. Both teams finished the regular season with 8-8 league records, putting them in a tie for the 16th and final playoff spot. Tuesday’s matchup was a play-in game to decide who would qualify.
The game was even at 6 goals apiece at the half, but the Vineyarders took charge in the second half, building an 11-6 lead before surrendering two late goals. MV senior Tom Irwin’s three goals led an offense that was spread among eight different scorers. Senior goalie Eli Laikin registered 16 saves, some of them huge stops as Mashpee pressed late in the game. For the visitors, junior goalie Jack Rodriguez had 17 saves of his own, and was instrumental in keeping his team in the game.
