On Saturday, the MV United U18 women took on Mariner and came away with a tie. Mariner scored on a cross that ran the back post early, but the Vineyard kept the pressure on and battled back, scoring late in the game on a goal by Alexis Condon.
On Sunday, the women played through torrential downpours against Swansea Somerset for the opportunity to represent the Vineyard and the South Coast Soccer League in the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions. Lena Hanschka scored first for United after a bobble by the opposing team’s goalkeeper, and won the “right place at the right time” award of the day. Later, on an absolutely perfect free kick, Molly Houghton scored the second goal and put the game away. Cana Courtney earned the clean sheet, with outstanding defensive support from Casey McAndrews. Each and every player contributed, both defensively and offensively, with good pressure, excellent passing, and plenty of shots on goal.
The team will face Dartmouth next week in a playoff game to determine seeding for the MTOC.
