A pastel sunset was the backdrop for Monday night’s Island Softball League play, as six teams faced off at Veterans Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven. Starting at 6:30, the summertime men’s league began its usual three-game sequence. First up, the Canes played the Shockers, with the Canes coming out on top 20-6. Next, the Highlanders walloped the relative newcomers the Mermen, 37-2. As darkness fell, the diamond lit up and the Whitecaps closed out the night with a 20-8 win over the Blazers. The mood was raucous and good-natured, as onlookers and waiting teams barbequed on the sidelines and watched batters thwack ball after ball high out into the field.
Island Softball League games begin at 6:30 pm on Monday and Thursday nights.
