Vineyarders harpoon Whalers in baseball sweep

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) baseball team traveled to Nantucket on Monday, and returned Tuesday with two wins over the archrival Whalers.

In the opener, the Vineyarders jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead and coasted to a 9-2 win.

Hunter Fox Jakusik went 3-4 with three singles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Chris Fiore tripled, singled, and scored once, batting a perfect 3-3. Elias Fhagen-Smith singled twice and scored once. Chris Mayhew tallied an RBI in the first inning, and Tabor Caron hit a two-run single in the seventh. Theo Gallagher, Jack Sierputoski, and Aidan Aliberti all singled.

Vineyard starter Jonas Lukowitz yielded just two hits and no runs, striking out nine and walking one in six innings.

The Vineyarders shut out the Whalers 3-0 on Tuesday to complete the sweep. Starting pitcher James Sashin got the win, scattering four hits, striking out six, and walking none in six innings. He also powered MV at the plate with a triple, single, RBI, and one run scored.

Jonas Lukowitz, Nick Fiore, and Elias Fhagen-Smith all singled, and Chris Mayhew pitched a clean seventh inning to earn the save.

The Vineyarders (3-4) finally play their home opener on Tuesday against Bourne. The first pitch is at 3:15 pm.
