The late, great heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano retired unbeaten at 49-0, but generally speaking, all streaks are meant to come to an end.

For the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) girls tennis team, the two-time defending MIAA Division 3 state champions and winners of 57 consecutive matches, the first defeat in nearly three years came Tuesday afternoon at Sharon High School. The Vineyarders (14-1) took both doubles matches, but the Eagles, last year’s Division 1 South Sectional finalists, swept the three singles matches to win, 3-2.

MV’s Lizzie Williamson and Victoria Scott rolled to a 6-0, 6-2, victory over Katie Merport and Emily Wen at first doubles, and the second doubles pairing of Paige and Molly Pogue followed suit by defeating Rithica Neti and Sophia Fein, 6-4, 6-3.

With Nupur Shukla topping Kat Roberts 6-0, 6-3, at first singles, and Emily Zhang defeating Kelly Klaren 6-0, 6-2, at second singles, the best-of-five series came down to the third singles contest between Vineyard freshman Hannah Rabasca and Sharon junior Lulu Yuan. The match played out over two tight sets, with Yuan prevailing 6-4, 6-4.
