Herbert Alton Landers

Herbert Alton Landers, 89, died on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at his home in Oak Bluffs. He was predeceased by his wife Elsie Mae (Gross) Landers in April 2015.

Herbert was born on Oct. 20, 1928, and grew up in Oak Bluffs, the son of Ernest and Bessie (Morgan) Landers. He attended the Oak Bluffs School and went on to work in the fishing and scalloping industry, tried some carpentry, and retired from the Oak Bluffs highway department.

Herbert was skilled in and enjoyed cooking, drawing, oil painting, and gardening along with scalloping and fishing.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia M. Sylva, and grandchildren Sonya Joy, Brittney Gunderson, Colette Sylva, Leland Sylva, Josiah Sylva, and Amy Landers; along with 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Margaret J. Landers, and his brothers, Edward, Ralph, Leslie, and Arthur Landers, and by his sister, Marion Landers.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 2 pm in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Pacific Avenue, in Oak Bluffs.
