Chilmark resident Lynn Murphy dies in motorcycle crash

Chilmark resident Lynn Murphy Jr., 39, died from injuries suffered Tuesday night around 7 pm after the motorcycle he was driving left the road and struck a telephone pole and trees on North Road in Chilmark.

Murphy, a Chilmark native, was the son of Susan Murphy and the late Lynn Murphy. He is survived by a brother, Lucas, and by half-brother Brian Murphy and half-sister Sherry Flanders who live on the Island. A Chilmark lifeguard in his early years, Murphy was unmarried without children.

Chilmark Police Chief Jonathan Klaren said Murphy suffered significant head trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Tri-Town EMS, according to a police press release issued Tuesday night.

Klaren said Murphy was apparently on his day off, driving home to Chilmark where he resided with his mother. Murphy is believed to have worked as a stonemason.

Klaren said Murphy was heading west on North Road, and that there were no skid marks at the scene on a bend in the road just past the old Chilmark fire station. “The bike was heavily damaged. No evidence of drugs or alcohol was found at the scene. There have been no eyewitnesses at this point, and we are working with the State Police unit to investigate the crash,” he said.

Klaren said his department initially withheld the name of the victim in order for relatives and friends of the well-known Chilmark family to be informed. “This is just devastating for Susan, her family and the community. They had just lost Lynn’s dad a year and one-half ago,” he said.
