The MVRHS cross country teams ran to decisive wins over the Falmouth Clippers in the final home meet of the season, Tuesday afternoon.
The Vineyard girls took the top five spots in a 15-47 win, while the boys swept positions 1-9 to beat the Clippers 15-50.
Wren Christy continued her impressive string of results by winning the girls race in 20:03. Catherine Cherry (20:38) was second, Eloise Christy (20:53), third, Amber Cuthbert (20:54), fourth and Yayla DeChiara (22:01), fifth. Annabelle Abbott was first for Falmouth and placed sixth overall in 22:55. Vineyarders Margaret Sykes (7th, 24:32) and Katy Freeman (9th, 25:53) also earned top 10 finishes.
In the boys race, Peter Burke was the fastest harrier, crossing the line in 17:13, followed by fellow Vineyarders Isaac Richards (2nd, 17:22), Owen Porterfield (3rd, 17:27), Kieran Karbees (4th, 17:38), Owen Atkins (5th, 17:42), Zach Utz (6th, 17:43), Daniel Rivard (7th, 18:07), Borja Tolay (8th, 18:12) and Nate Porterfield (9th, 18:35). Falmouth’s Henry Gardner (19:04) was 10th.
After the meet, Coach Joe Schroeder recognized his two seniors, captain Owen Porterfield and Enrique Contreras, who shaved two minutes off of his personal best time to finish in 29:55.
Friday night at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds, the Vineyard harriers had a night to remember at the Bob McIntyre Twilight Invitational. The varsity girls ran third of 24 teams overall, the varsity boys placed sixth among 33 teams and the jayvee boys were second of 25 in the Division 2 events.
Wren Christy (19:38.5) and Catherine Cherry (19:41.4) were one, two for the Vineyard girls in the varsity 5K, placing 27th and 28th overall among 192 runners. Yayla DeChiara (20:03.1) ran 35th, Eloise Christy (20:24.9) 51st and Amber Cuthbert (20:54.8) 68th.
Peter Burke ran 17th in a varsity boys field of 251 with a personal best time of 16:35.1. Isaac Richards (16:41.1) also earned a PB and placed 24th. Owen Porterfield (17:14.2) was 56th, Zach Utz (17:28.5) 73rd, Owen Atkins (17:28.5) 74th, Kieran Karabees (17:32) 80th and Daniel Rivard (17:45.1) 95th.
Nate Porterfield and Borja Tolay posted outstanding top five finishes among 212 harriers in the jayvee boys 5K, placing second and fourth, respectively in 17:43.9 and 17:47.7. Tom Sykes (18:49.2) ran 16th, JoJo Bonneau (18:55.3) 21st, Dash Christy (19:52.2) 53rd, Matt D’Andrea (19:55.8) 55th and Ethan Creato (20:39.1) 85th.
Ashley Biggs was the lone Vineyarder to compete in the jayvee girls 5K and finished 68th of 163 runners in 24:44.9.
In the 2.1 mile freshman races, Jonathan Norton (28th, 12:34.7) and Henry D’Andrea (29th, 12:40.5) were the pace setters for the Vineyard boys in a field of 181. Duncan Brown (13:29.8) was 71st, Calvin Brooks (13:39.5) 79th and Colin McNamee (14:58.8) 132nd. Kaitlyn Freeman (15:13.3) was 39th of 108 for the Vineyard girls.
Next up for the Vineyard harriers is the Cape and Islands League Championship meet on Tuesday at Cape Cod Academy in Osterville.
