The MVRHS girls and boys lacrosse teams began a new era of play in the Cape and Islands League with opening-day victories over the Sturgis East Storm on Thursday.
The girls hosted the Storm at Dan McCarthy Field in Oak Bluffs, and rolled to a 19-1 win. Addy Hayman led the potent Vineyard offense with five goals, six assists, and six draw controls won. Skyla Harthcock and Louise McDonald netted three goals apiece, Alexis Condon tallied twice with one assist, Sophie Combra and Abby Marchand each had a goal and two assists, and Lollie Bezahler, Sally Caron, Allyse Guyther, and Megan Zellinger added a goal apiece. Lila Mikos picked up the win in net with three saves.
At Simpkins Field in South Yarmouth, Zander Amaral scored a hat trick to lift the Vineyard boys to a 12-9 win over Sturgis East. Aiden Marek and Ivan Shepherd each notched a pair of goals and assists, Colby Zarba scored twice with one assist, and Eli Gundersen had a goal and an assist. Hunter Meader scored a goal in his first varsity game, and Hunter Ahearn chipped in another score as the Vineyarders held off a Storm surge in the fourth quarter to earn the league win. Max Smith was the winning netminder with nine saves. Brendan Morris gave MV the edge on faceoffs, and led the Vineyarders in ground ball wins along with teammate John McCormack.
The boys’ home opener is April 4 versus Monomoy at 3 pm, and the girls host Sturgis West on Tuesday at 3 pm.
