The MVRHS tennis teams started off the season and their debuts in the Cape and Island League with opening-day victories on Thursday afternoon.
With a blustery wind swirling around the Ned Fennessy Courts in Oak Bluffs, the boys hosted Monomoy and sank the Sharks, 4-1. First singles Chris Ferry defeated Troy Olson, 6-2, 6-0, while Max Potter and Eric Reubens each posted double bagels in 6-0, 6-0, wins at second and third singles over Dave Malone and Ben Roza. Owen Favreau and Spencer Pogue downed Danny Street and Isaiah Stafford at first doubles 6-0, 6-3, but the Sharks left the Island with a point as the second doubles tandem of Colin Malone and Joseph Malone topped David Krauthamer and Luke Nivala, 6-2, 1-6.
The Vineyard girls, meanwhile, traveled to Harwich and beat Monomoy, 5-0, in Chris Scott’s first match as head coach. Kelly Klaren defeated Lindsay McDonald at first singles, 6-0, 6-1, Victoria Scott took second singles over Julia Smith 6-1, 6-1, and third singles Hannah Rabasca beat Hannah Marty 6-0, 6-0. In first doubles, Molly Pogue and Chesca Quinlan-Potter topped Aliza Pillsbury and Ava Barbella 6-1, 6-1. Second doubles Tessa Hammond and Alex Rego completed the Vineyard sweep with a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Olivia Prisco and Molly McKenna.
The boys are back on the home courts on April 4 at 3 pm to take on Rising Tide Charter School, while the girls travel to Rising Tide the same day, and host the Nantucket Whalers on April 6 at 12:30 pm.
