The new sidewalk outside the Black Dog Bakery & Cafe in Vineyard Haven is being poured Tuesday morning. The sidewalk was dangerous because the curb was about six inches taller than the pavement.

A cement truck from Goodale Construction was at the scene. Because of the construction, traffic is snarled even more than usual at Five Corners.

The sidewalk is part of a total renovation of the Black Dog location at 3 Water St. to keep the restaurant from flooding during coastal storms. Work has been ongoing since January.

In February, the town gave its blessing for the sidewalk project.

“Besides raising the floor, the sidewalk is the second biggest thing I’m excited about,” Chris LaPointe, food and beverage director for the Black Dog, said. “They’re like 1 and 1A.”

The restaurant has all new electrical, all new plumbing, and the entrance has been totally revamped.

There are some finishing touches inside, but the Black Dog is close to reopening in the next week or so, LaPointe said.
