To the Editor:
Maybe it’s time to think about not only removing the plaques to the Civil War statue, but the statue itself. We have a lovely new museum which holds historic Island relics such as that. This statue has confused many into thinking it’s a Confederate soldier\, and wondering how it represents O.B. and the Island community. Why not use this “gateway” location to let people know who we are? Wouldn’t it be exciting to come up with a relevant art piece which celebrates the spirit of O.B.? Why not let the community have a voice and offer suggestions? Or we can expand the idea of public art, and create a monuments park filled with our beloved Island “characters.” Personally, I’d love to see a certain Blues man greeting visitors.
