Humphreys Bakery and Slice of Life Café announce a new business partnership and grand opening of Life at Humphrey’s. Donna Diaz, owner of Humphreys Bakery in Vineyard Haven, and Peter Smyth, owner of Slice of Life Café, which recently closed its doors on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, have announced a new business partnership. Diaz and Smyth have merged their two business concepts and rebranded with the new name Life at Humphreys, which will be operated in the same building at Woodland Center in Vineyard Haven, where Humphreys has operated for many years.
According to a press release, approximately six months ago Diaz hired Island business consultant India Rose to facilitate a business plan for a rebrand and new launch for Humphreys. During this process, and in Rose’s search for a managing head baker for Humphreys, she connected Diaz and Smyth.
“Humphreys has been in my family for 70 years,” Diaz says in the release. “It was established in 1949, 2019 marked our 70th anniversary, and I really wanted to bring something new and fresh to both the business and the community. Once Peter and I started talking about what this might look like, I couldn’t wait for that first green tomato BLT to be made in the Humphreys kitchen.”
Smyth said that he’s glad the new collaboration will still have the feel of a family-owned restaurant.
“Slice of Life was a family-owned business, and so was Humphreys,” Smyth says in the release. “I love that Life at Humphreys will keep that same family-owned business feel. I also really like that we are a counter takeout operation, and I no longer have to worry about the table service overhead.”
According to a press release, Life at Humphreys will officially open its doors on Wednesday, April 10, with a menu that includes favorites from both businesses. All customers who come in on launch day will receive free treats and be entered in a contest for prizes. They will also have a dinner pop-up event on Friday, April 5, from 4 to 7 pm, which includes some of Smyth’s specialties.
