The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) varsity boys baseball team opened their home season on Tuesday with a convincing 10-0 win over Sturgis Charter School West. The hosts broke open a 4-0 game with six runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. With the win, the boys evened their record at 2-2 overall, 2-0 in league competition.
Spearheading the win for the hosts was senior tri-captain Mike Habekost, who pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing only two infield hits. Habekost was in control from start to finish, dominating the Gator hitters with his fastball and his control. He contributed to the offense as well with four hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Habekost had plenty of support from his teammates. Senior tri-captain Sam Cranston had two hits and two RBIs in the leadoff spot, while junior Miles Sidoti reached base three times on two hits and a walk, and scored two runs. The hosts collected 12 hits on the day. Meanwhile, the defense, anchored by Cranston in centerfield and senior tri-captain Owen Bresnick at second base, was solid throughout.
The game was clinched with a six-run rally in the sixth. As the temperatures dropped and the fans shivered, the Vineyarders heated up. After junior Jared Regan led off with a single and a steal of second base, nine more batters would come to the plate in the inning. When Habekost retired the Gators without a hit in the seventh, the well-deserved home opener win was in the books.
The Vineyard will play at Dennis-Yarmouth next Tuesday at 11 am, and will host Falmouth High School next Thursday at 11:30 am.
