The defending champion Mama’s Girls beat the Creamers, 5-0, in a rematch of last season’s Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Softball League final, Tuesday night at Veterans Park.
The night belonged to the Mama’s star shortstop and slugger Jenna Zechner, who celebrated her birthday by figuring in 12 of the 21 Creamers outs. Six putouts were unassisted, none better than a balletic, leaping snare on a ball in shallow left to end the fifth inning. Jenna also chalked up two hits, scored a run, and knocked in another with a sac fly.
The Mamas picked their spots offensively, scoring once in the third, fourth, and six innings and twice in the seventh. Leadoff batter Lauren Williston was 3 for 4 with an RBI-triple, Gail Herman had a pair of singles and an RBI, Martha Scheffer ripped a screamer down the left field line to score Jaime Forend in the fourth inning, and Hayley Panek had an RBI in the sixth. Pitcher Jillian Sedlier held the Creamers to three singles, by Alleyne Hughes, Tara Dinkel, and Kelly Bowse. On defense, the Creamers turned a pair of double plays.
In the second game of the Tuesday night twin bill, the Rug Sox picked up their first win of the season by topping the Wild Pitches, 10-1.
The Sox got off to a blazing start in their first at-bat. Jen Ingraham, Katherine Clark, Emily Turney, and Summer Cardoza all singled and scored for a 4-0 lead. Emily DeBettencourt scored the Pitches’ only run in the home half of the first, but the Rug Sox added three more runs in the second on singles by Jess Sonia, Tianna Rambonga, Sam Robinson, Sam Cron, and Julie Pringle.
The Sox closed out their win with three more runs in the sixth. Wink Cron led off the final barrage of singles, with Ingraham, Clark, Cardoza, and Marisa Estrella following in kind. Michelle Cacciotti also singled for the Rug Sox in the game.
Sue Sanford paced the Pitches offense with three singles, while Katie Chapman, Erin Morris, Jil Matrisciano, and Rachel Rooney had two hits apiece.
