The Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Softball League will have a new champion this season. The Snaps knocked out the defending champion Mamas Girls, 12-10, Thursday night on the high school varsity field, and advanced to the finals to play the Creamers on Tuesday night at Veterans Park at 6:15 pm.
The top of the Snaps order, Ashley Tarter, Lauren Merry and Kurstin Moore, combined for nine hits, and scored seven runs. Chrissy DeOliveira added a two-run double, single, and a run scored, while Hailee McCarthy, Jackie Millard, and Kelly Marolf each hit RBI singles on the night.
For the Mamas, pitcher Jillian Sedlier helped her cause with a home run and a single; Martha Scheffer had three hits and three RBIs; Jaime Forend singled and reached base four times, scoring four runs; Jenna Zechner hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning; Emily Rasmussen had two hits and scored twice; Lauren Williston hit an RBI double; and Hayley Panek knocked in a run in the sixth.
The Snaps and Creamers are each seeking a third title. The teams met for the 2011 championship, with the Snaps winning, 9-7.
The Creamers are 2-0 in the current double-elimination tournament, and need one more victory to win the championship. The Snaps are 2-1, and would need to beat the Creamers twice to claim the crown. A second game on Tuesday, if necessary, will start immediately after the conclusion of game one.
