COVID-19 cases hit 30

Twenty-six are from tests; four are probable positives.

No new confirmed cases Saturday.

The Martha’s Vineyard Boards of Health reported one new confirmed positive case of COVID-19, bringing the Island’s total to 30.

On Friday, in a new breakdown of Island data, the boards of health reported that 26 patients have tested positive for COVID-19. Of those, two were tested off-Island, 15 are female and 11 are male. According to the report, 19 of the confirmed positive cases are no longer symptomatic and have been released from isolation, six are still being monitored by the boards of health, and one was unable to be contacted by the boards of health.

Seven of the cases are aged 50-59 years old, seven cases are 60-69 years old, five are 20-29 years old, two are 30-39 years old, two are 20 years old or younger, two are 40-49, and one is 70 years or older.

A new reporting metric on the daily report shows linked cases. According to Valley, 16 individuals are linked to another case.

The boards of health also reported an additional four cases that are probable positive cases who received positive antibody tests. Of those antibody tests, two are aged 50-59, one is aged 40-49, and one is aged 20-29. All of the probable positive tests are female. Among the four probable positives are also three linked cases.

Since the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital only reports on cases it has tested, the hospital’s daily count reported of the 650 total patients tested for COVID-19, 24 were positive, 621 were negative, and five are pending results.

There are zero hospitalizations at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. While the hospital has kept its hospitalizations low, it has confirmed that three patients, including a maternity patient, have been transferred off-Island. 

The hospital has confirmed that two COVID-19 positive patients had been transferred to Boston via Boston Medflight and the maternity patient who tested positive for COVID-19 was transferred to Boston via land. A hospital employee is also one of the 24 confirmed cases reported by the hospital.

At the state level Thursday, the Department of Public Health reported 110 new COVID-19 related deaths. There have been 5,592 total deaths across the state.

DPH also reported there were 1,239 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 83,421— making it the fourth highest in cases and third highest in deaths, according to the New York Times coronavirus map. Massachusetts has performed 435,679 tests.

Of all cases across the state, three percent are hospitalized — marking a downward trend. 

At his daily press briefing Friday Gov. Charlie Baker asked companies across the state to allow their employees to continue working from home if possible.

“We know there is no one-size-fits-all approach to this,” Baker said. He urged those that could to continue letting their employees work from home. “There are hundreds of companies and thousands of employees who are now successfully working remotely.”

Baker’s statements come ahead of May 18, when the state is expected to release its four phase plan to reopen the economy.


  1. It will be very interesting to see what happens May 18th when Governor Baker decides what will and what will not happen to our state and our island!
    All I can say is that whatever he decides, orders he dam sure better makes sure that from his seat up there that every department down to our island’s Board of Selectmen, Boards of Health, our County Commissioners and every island Police Departments “Strictly Enforce those orders to the tee swiftly and no half-stepping as they usually do”!

  2. The US Constitution is still in effect strictly enforcement of unconstitutional rules is illegal and a threat to democracy. The selfishness and tribalism that has been exhibited on Martha’s Vineyard and much of the nation is a far greater danger than COVID-19, those who fail to learn history (there are many) are doomed to repeat it, democracy is not an abstract concept to be discarded when convenient. This country used for value independence and freedom. It is both sad and dangerous that we forget the sacrifices made to keep this country free and are willing to discard basic liberties for an illusion of safety, freedom is not free or safe, life requires risk to survive. The United States is now the home of the entitled and land of media lead robots. Educate yourselves turn off the main stream media the data and models are dangerously flawed and are being used to confuse and scare the public. Over 75% of the population will be COVID-19 before this is over the vast majority over 90% will not require hospitalization, those who do will be the old and the unhealthy. The old can be sheltered and protected without shutting down the economy, the majority of the unhealthy is this country are unhealthy by choice smoking, food choices that encourage obesity, and lack of exercise. Why should the majority of middle class workers and small businesses suffer for a small percentage of the population many of which are unhealthy by choice. I am struck by the food item shelves that are now almost always empty: toilet paper, pizza, pasta, mac and cheese it is though we live in some alternative universe where people are willing to give up their rights to be safe but unwilling to change their diet and life choices to improve their health and survival.

    • OldMan: some thoughts: Unless your a student of american history most people do not realize that before the civil war of the United States of America, New England states minus Maine because the land mass of Maine was part of Massachusetts and New Hampshire did not have a coast line yet had a movement to separate from the federalist system and band together in a grouping for security, trade and town and state rights. There were many reasons behind this movement two of which were the transcendentalist and abolitionist movements. Transcendentalists believe that society and its institutions—particularly organized religion and political parties—corrupt the purity of the individual. They have faith that people are at their best when truly “self-reliant” and independent. It is only from such real individuals that true community can form. An abolitionist, as the name implies, is a person who sought to abolish slavery during the 19th century. More specifically, these individuals sought the immediate and full emancipation of all slaves. I point out this part of american history to illustrate that the constitution of the United States of America has not and is not always held in the highest of regard by all regions and at all times by the people thats We The People. The same people who signed off on the following; We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. I submit another founding document I belive is more important our Declaration of Independence; When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. I for one feel that our region once again as in history has found itself at a cross roads, are we to stay within a system which has been corrupted so that We The People no longer have our enfranchisement which has and is currently being stolen by corrupt politicians and their parties, foreign countries, multi media cooperations. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.President Thomas Jefferson said that every generation needed to have a revolution. What would it take to actually cause Americans to start a war to overthrow the current government? Well I do not know the answer to the question that president Jefferson poses, I do know our leadership at the federal level has disenfranchised us and that at some point we may want to revisit history and build on lessons learned and possibly bringing into being a confederation of northeastern states, just saying.
