Since last spring, Island artist Valentine Estabrook has taught virtual children’s art classes in collaboration with the West Tisbury library from her studio in West Tisbury. Classes for children ages 5 to 10 began with the basics: Composition, drawing, and lights and darks. Students learned that shadow and light tell the time of day and the direction of the sunlight. Each class was different in scope, and students learned to work with pastels, acrylic paints, charcoal sticks, and pencils. Each medium offered her students new opportunities in expression. Estabrook was raised to believe that every child is born with an artistic instinct. “It is, to varying degrees, a part of our nature … A beautiful artistic sense to tap and hold forever,” Estabrook says in a press from the library.
The exhibit will be displayed throughout the rest of February and into March on the West Tisbury library Virtual Gallery: wtlibraryvirtualgallery.org.
