Three weeks ago, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School girls lacrosse team hosted Nantucket at Dan McCarthy Field and lost, 15-5. Friday afternoon, MV traveled to Nantucket for the rematch. The gritty young Vineyarders gave the Whalers all they could handle but came up a goal short in a 12-11 loss.
Ali Dyke scored four goals, Nellie Long and Caroline Kelleher each tallied twice, and Maggie Best, Elena Giordano and Lily Sebastian scored a goal apiece. Kelleher and Isabelle Murphy added assists.
Vineyard Coach Jo Douglas said in a text to the Times, “We lost just barely, 12-11, but played our best game of the season! We improved tremendously since the last time we played them earlier in the season.”
The previous day, the Vineyarders lost to a powerful Sandwich team, 13-5, at Dan McCarthy Field. MV rallied from an early 8-0 deficit to hold the Blue Knights at 5-5 over the final three quarters.
Maggie Best, Ali Dyke, Elena Girodano, Lily Moran and Nellie Long scored the Vineyard goals, with Violet MacPhail and Brooke Ward adding assists.
The Vineyarders host Barnstable on Monday at 3 pm and visit Nauset on Tuesday for a 4 pm start.
