To the Editor:
Our near neighbors on the Cape suffer from the effects of toxic water contamination from former Otis AFB. By now, elevated “cancer-cluster” risk, mortality statistics, bottled water — and suffering — are facts of life in Cape towns due to the loss of water quality.
In the postwar years, though, there was not much awareness of the future Superfund sites many, if not most, military bases would become. Indeed, municipalities considered themselves fortunate to have one of these economic gifts from the Defense Department.
Are we on the Vineyard to be so shortsighted as to be able to ignore the glaring example right across Vineyard Sound?
