A photo from the eclipse of 2017 — Stacey Rupolo

On April 8, a solar eclipse will pass over the Northeastern U.S. And from 2 to 4 pm, libraries in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven will hold eclipse viewing events, allowing participants to safely view the eclipse through certified glasses.

Martha’s Vineyard should expect to see more than 90 percent coverage of the sun during the upcoming eclipse, much greater than the 65 percent obscuration during the 2017 partial solar eclipse.

Locally, the eclipse will begin at 2:16 pm, with greatest magnitude at 3:29 pm.

Through a grant from the Space Science Institute’s Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL) program, all libraries on the Island will be providing certified solar eclipse glasses leading up to the event or on the actual day. Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than regular sunglasses. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing an eclipse.

For those who don’t plan to attend a library viewing party, most libraries will have free eclipse glasses available for pickup while supplies last.

One pair of glasses will be available per person, with a maximum of two pairs of glasses per family.

West Tisbury library will have glasses to use at the library on the day of the eclipse only, and Edgartown library will be closed from April 2 through 6.

  1. HMMMMM–so the “scientist” say this is gonna happen.
I can’t wait for the deny-everythingers here tell us it’s
“not gonna happen”. But I have heard that it’s not really
the moon getting between us and the sun, — it’s really
that George Soros has put a giant dinner plate in space so we
can’t see him fixing his space lasers. Does anybody really
think that the last giant rocket that Elon Mush launched
and supposedly broke up in orbit a few weeks ago was empty ?
    I don’t know….
I tried asking MTG about it , but she is very busy investigating
how Hunter Biden got on and off of that cargo ship in Baltimore after he
    crashed it into a bridge.
