Earth Day falls on April 22. It was founded in 1970 and focused on sustainability, reducing pollution, and conservation. Today, over 1 billion people in 193+ countries participate in a variety of events that focus on climate change, resource protection, and green energy.
Since the Island is a big supporter of conservation, with an ingrained culture of environmental protection, land preservation, and advocacy, we know how to celebrate Earth Day. Organizations like the Vineyard Conservation Society (VCS) and The Nature Conservancy preserve land, manage habitats, and promote sustainability. This year, there are several community-focused events as listed below, as well as the opportunity to explore trails at Felix Neck and study erosion at the Gay Head Cliffs.
Key 2026 Earth Week Events:
- The Wild World of Animals Show (April 22, 3:30 pm): Live, educational animal show at the Tisbury School featuring creatures from around the world.
- History of Energy on MV (April 25, 2 pm): Presentation by Vineyard Power at Edgartown Public Library regarding the island’s transition to renewable energy.
- Annual Shearing Day (April 26, 10 am): Island Alpaca Company hosts a community event to watch alpaca shearing and learn about fiber production.
