John B. Freeman of Oak Bluffs passed away on July 29, 2026.
John was an educator for 30 years before retiring to Martha’s Vineyard. He was a very active member of the United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard, and all the ministries connected to UMC of M.V. He loved reminding people he met that God loved them just as they were. He posted several hundred “thoughts and prayers” on the UMC of M.V. Facebook page, focusing on observations, Bible quotes, and prayers.
John also loved working for the Island Queen, where he interacted with all the people coming and going in the boarding area in Oak Bluffs. He’d entertain the passengers by playing tunes on his harmonica, and get people talking about their experiences on the Island.
John was much loved by his wife, Marilyn Freeman; and children, Kerry and Brian (Becca); and grandson Charlie.
John’s lifelong involvement with folk music and as a contradance caller brought him great joy. When you hear thunder, assume John has organized and is calling a dance in the kingdom above.
John was a friend since Junior High .

He will be missed.
