As the spring sports regular season comes to an end, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) girls varsity tennis team still holds a perfect record after defeating Monomoy on 3-2 Friday and Sharon High School 4-1 on Saturday.

Their wins over the weekend bring the Vineyarders’ record to 14-0, keeping them in first place in the Cape and Islands League rankings and first place in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division 3 power rankings.

Last year, the girls tennis team placed second in the MIAA finals, falling to Dover-Sherborn 5-0 in the championship at MIT’s DuPont Tennis Courts. The girls avenged that championship loss in April this year when they defeated Dover-Sherborn in a close 3-2 match. Now, the Vineyarders are eying another strong postseason run.

Bill Rigali, head coach of MVRHS varsity girls tennis who was recently honored Coach of the Year at the inaugural Cape and Islands Scholar Athletes award ceremony, said he was proud of his team’s performance on Friday against Monomoy.

“It was a very good team,” said Rigali of Monomoy after the game on Friday. “It came down to some clutch doubles play from Zoe [Trietmen] and Josie [Johns].”

Rigali said as the Vineyard tennis team looks toward the playoffs, they still have some work to do.

“We have things we want to keep working on,” said Rigali. “Strengthening our serves, our net play, and finishing with our overheads and our aggressive shots. We’re making strides and we’re going to keep focusing on that.”

A few other Vineyard teams are also rounding out their league matches and preparing for the MIAA state Division 3 postseason runs. Vineyard baseball is ranked 23 in the MIAA state Division 3 power rankings with a 9-9 record; boys tennis is 11-4, ranked 12; boys lacrosse is 5-10, ranked 36; girls lacrosse is 8-6, ranked 38; and softball is 3-13, ranked 72.

Girls tennis has two more regular season games before moving onto the postseason. Tuesday at 2:45 pm the girls play Nantucket at home and on Wednesday at 3:30 pm, they take on Barnstable in an away game.
