Continuing my stint on Beach St. Extension, I can report: Visitors are arriving! So many people pre- and post-holiday visiting M.V. for the first time ever, or the first time in a long while. I was also blessed with a visit from a respectable tabby who wandered through our open doorway to meow at me … before continuing on its way. Another (human) visitor staying just a stone’s throw from the Steamship Authority noted, “That boat horn is so loud — I didn’t ask for a wake-up call!” When I first moved to town, hearing the boat was my very favorite part of living in Tisbury. But to each their own, and I guess all this means summer is truly upon us.
In other news, did you know there are now several spots in Tisbury where you can enjoy live music? Last Friday I found myself in the incredible predicament of deciding between seeing Marciana Jones and Maryse Smith at S&S Kitchenette, the Washashores MV at Vineyard Grill, or Johnny Hoy and the Original Bluefish at the Black Dog Tavern. In the end we grooved along with Johnny Hoy and his Original Bluefish: Barbara Puciul and Don Groover, with Mark Hurwitz on percussion, backdropped by the harbor at sunset. (And I didn’t even notice any loud ferry horns!)
This is the final weekend of the Louisa Gould Gallery’s annual “Spring Group Show,” featuring Sean Roach, Christie Scheele, Teek Eaton-Koch, Juliean Jarreau, and Paul Beebe. It’s open 11 am to 4 pm.
Tuesday, June 2, at 6 pm, head to the Katharine Cornell Theatre for the next Open Mic Night. Come to play, or just to listen. Sign up on arrival; it’s free and open to all.
Saturday, May 30, from 9 am to 2 pm, is the next Electronics Disposal Day. As a fairly frequent flyer to these biannual events, I can say from experience: It won’t take as long as you think, and it feels great disposing of your old, unwanted electronics on-Island in an environmentally safe way while also benefiting both M.V. Community Services and the MVRHS Junior Class.
Last, I have to shout-out about Rise Vineyard Performing Arts’ annual recital, on Sunday, May 31, at 10 am and 4 pm at MVRHS. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I remember back when Rise first opened in 2007, when I was still in high school. At that time Jil Matrisciano was our Minnesingers dance choreographer, and I even taught dance classes at Rise as a senior in high school. I remember opening my college acceptance letter in the Rise studio, and for my last recital, I performed alongside my very young students dressed as an octopus for a memorable rendition of “Octopus’s Garden.” To all the dancers out there this weekend: Merde!
Happy 10th anniversary to Nobnocket Boutique Inn this month, and belated birthday wishes to our First Friday music maestro, Andy Herr. Do you have something you want shared in a future Tisbury column? Email me at tisburycolumnist@gmail.com with your own stories of our town, favorite memories from Kay’s columns, and anything coming up that you want spotlighted here. I certainly don’t want to miss anyone’s rightful “big bunches of birthday balloons,” or the next best event not to be missed in our corner of the island.
