The Martha’s Vineyard varsity girls’ tennis team have been in the spotlight over the past couple months for their undefeated season, and they just tacked one more win onto their record after beating Auburn High School in round two of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) playoffs in a commanding 5-0 finish.
On Thursday, the Vineyarders controlled the pace of play from the start against Auburn at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) Ned Fenessy courts. Auburn put up solid volleys, but MVRHS athletes earned wins across the board in singles and doubles. The victory brings the girls’ undefeated record to 17-0.
“It was a good start to the tournament,” Vineyard Head Coach Bill Rigali said after the match. “Auburn’s got a nice team. They got the ball back in play, and our girls handled it well.”
Rigali said that “the next round will be tough,” but the team is taking each round “one at a time.”
The Vineyarders’ next match in the MIAA state finals is scheduled for Monday at 3 pm at home, where they will take on North Reading High School.
The Vineyard girls are ranked number one in the MIAA state power rankings, and North Reading is ranked 16. But Rigali said North Reading is a tough opponent, and the Vineyard girls are going to need to mentally prepare for a battle.
“They’re a quality team,” said Rigali. “We’ll have to be ready to play our best.”
Overall, Rigali said, the Vineyarders just need to keep playing their game by “working on our game and mentally being prepared to play.”
“Our volleys closing in at the net need a little work, in singles and doubles,” Rigali said.
