The Battle in the Bluffs is a three-day experiential event held in Oak Bluffs. This annual event includes youth leadership opportunities, sports, and an experiential learning initiative that has become a staple of the Island’s summer landscape.

Founded by Executive Director Ian Thomas-Minor, Connective Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through culture, education, experiential learning, and community engagement. What began as a basketball event has grown into a multifaceted youth development platform that connects students from across the country with mentors, professionals, entrepreneurs, and life-changing opportunities.

“Battle in the Bluffs has never been about basketball alone,” said Thomas-Minor. “The game simply gives us a way to bring young people together. The real goal has always been exposing them to possibility, helping them build meaningful relationships, and showing them what leadership, community, and excellence look like in real time.”

This year’s Battle in the Bluffs welcomes participants from Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Connecticut, and California. Participants will also engage in community events, mentorship opportunities, networking sessions, and educational experiences throughout Oak Bluffs and Martha’s Vineyard. As part of its 15th anniversary celebration, Connective Inc. will also premiere a documentary chronicling the history and impact of Battle in the Bluffs, highlighting stories from participants, alumni, families, and community partners whose lives have been touched by the program over the past decade and a half.
